Edward R. Mercure, 53, of Waterford, formerly a longtime resident of Harwinton and Plainville, passed away unexpectedly from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident Monday, April 5, 2010. Born in New Britain Nov. 5, 1956, he was the beloved son of Joseph "Bob" and Jane (Fayle) Mercure. Ed leaves his two sons, Matthew and Kevin Mercure and their mother, Jeanette Francini; his sisters, Sharon Washburn and her husband, Glenn; Maureen Mercure; Colleen Brochu and her husband, Mark; Gail Colossale and her husband, Michael; his nephews and nieces, Ben and Josh Bachman; Erin and Taegan Brochu; Gracie, Sam, Harrison, and Mason Colossale; and his close friend, Christine Mastrianni. A graduate of St. Paul Catholic High School and Tunxis Community College, Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne, Ft. Bragg, N.C. He was a dedicated police officer beginning his career in Avon and retiring from the West Hartford Police Department. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Dedicated to health and fitness, Ed was most recently employed by the YMCA as a personal trainer. He was passionate about Harley Davidson motorcycles participating in many Rolling Thunder Rallies in Washington, D.C. He enjoyed the Boston Red Sox, Army Football, and extreme roller coasters. Ed was a quiet and caring man who always put his family first and above all else loved his two boys, Matt and Kevin. He will be truly missed by all those who knew him. Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Plainville. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Plainville. Family and friends are welcome to gather Friday, April 9, 2010, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
